- DESCRIPTION: This is a model kit of a Spartan Camp set based on our modular "HOPPIDUS" system for ancient fortifications and designed specifically for use with DBA rules. This set contains a selection of all the modules needed to recreate a sacred enclosure. The complete set, as shown here, consists of a large Dokana which is used as a fence door and in four reinforcement sections of the palisade, leaving ample room for an element of field followers to be placed inside.
The Dokana, or "ray-figures" were a symbolic representation of the brotherly love of Castor and Polydeukes, the military protectors of Sparta, and one (presumably smaller than the one shown here!) May have been brought before the army in countryside . In the legends Castor and Polydeukes were twin sons of King Tindar of Lakedaimon, or sometimes of Zeus himself, and their cult was centered in Sparta. There is not much evidence to attract, but it is very likely that a Spartan camp, which probably consisted of little more than men and their baggage, included at least one small enclosed area that served as headquarters for all military operations and religious ceremonies, and they were the treasure and all the important documents were kept. This sacred enclosure would certainly have been placed under the protection of the Gods, symbolized by a Dokana.
